Prose
Purpose
A paragraph of running text, in the soft ink, with its line length bounded. Beyond about 58 characters the eye loses the next line coming back to the margin; the component sets that bound so that no page has to remember it.
When to use, when not
Use it for the sentences under a heading, an introduction, a caption of more than one line. Do not use it for interface labels, which belong to their control, nor for lists or tables.
Anatomy
- A paragraph, soft ink, with a maximum width in characters.

Accessibility contract
- Role and name: a paragraph.
- Keyboard, focus, live regions: none.
- The soft ink measures 7.32:1 on the page and 7.64:1 on a surface (tokens/contrast.json).
Content rules
French, full sentences, one idea per sentence. No “il est important de”.
Do and don’t
- Do let it wrap; a measure is a maximum, never a fixed width.
- Do not put a heading’s job in it: a bold first sentence is not a heading.

Decisions
- 2026-08: 58 characters by default, the site’s article measure being 66 and the page rule 70; a paragraph under a heading reads best shorter than a column of prose.
- 2026-09-24:
rl-paragraphrules on the tokens; the class is notrl-prose, which the base layer reserves for article typography. The measure stays the one dynamic style.
Criteria held by construction
- 10.11, Pour chaque page web, les contenus peuvent-ils être présentés sans avoir recours à un défilement vertical pour une fenêtre ayant une hauteur de 256px ou à un défilement horizontal pour une fenêtre ayant une largeur de 320px ?
The measure is a maximum in characters, not a fixed width: the paragraph reflows at 320 pixels without horizontal scrolling.
